Swimming with Whale Sharks on Mafia Island: Everything You Need to Know

If swimming alongside the world's largest fish is on your bucket list, Mafia Island might be the best place on earth to do it. Unlike busier whale shark destinations in the Maldives or Mexico, Mafia offers an intimate experience in genuinely wild conditions — no crowds, no barriers, just you and the ocean.

When Do Whale Sharks Visit Mafia Island?

Whale sharks are present around Mafia Island year-round, but sightings are most reliable from October through March — the peak season when the ocean is calmer and visibility is clearest. The aggregation around Kilindoni Bay tends to peak between November and February, when numbers can be particularly high.

Outside these months, sightings are still common but less guaranteed. The high season (June–September) can also produce encounters, particularly in deeper water further from shore.

What to Expect in the Water

Mafia's whale shark excursions run from Kilindoni, the island's main town. A typical trip goes like this:

• Early morning departure by boat (whale sharks are most active in the morning light)


• The crew scans the surface for distinctive dorsal fins or feeding activity near the water's surface


• When a shark is spotted, you slip into the water — typically 4–6 guests at a time — and snorkel alongside it


• Encounters typically last 15–45 minutes per shark, and multiple encounters in one trip are common

Mafia's whale sharks are filter feeders — they eat only tiny plankton and pose no threat to swimmers. They are, however, enormous: adults commonly reach 8–10 metres. Being in the water beside one is one of the most humbling experiences in nature.

Responsible Whale Shark Swimming

Mafia Island has strict guidelines to protect its whale shark population, enforced by the Mafia Island Marine Park. The rules exist because whale sharks are a vulnerable species:

• No touching the sharks at any time


• Maintain a minimum distance of 3 metres from the body, 4 metres from the tail


• No flash photography


• No feeding or attempting to ride


• Maximum 10 snorkelers in the water per shark at any time

Do I Need to Be a Strong Swimmer?

You need to be a competent swimmer — the excursion involves open water snorkelling, and you may need to swim quickly to keep pace with the shark. Strong swimming skills are a real advantage. We provide masks, snorkels, and fins, and our guides are in the water with you at all times. Scuba diving with whale sharks is not permitted in the marine park area where they typically feed.
