Best Time to Visit Mafia Island: A Month-by-Month Guide

Mafia Island sits in the Indian Ocean off the southern coast of Tanzania, and like much of East Africa, its seasons are driven by the monsoon cycle rather than the standard four-season calendar. Knowing which month suits your plans makes a real difference to your experience.

The Two Monsoon Seasons

Tanzania's coast has two monsoon seasons:

• Kusi (southeast monsoon): mid-May through September. Stronger winds, rougher seas, and occasional rain. Whale shark encounters continue, but boat trips can be choppier.


• Kasikazi (northeast monsoon): November through March. Light winds, calm seas, excellent visibility in the water, and peak whale shark aggregations.

Between the monsoons — April through mid-May and October — are the transitional periods. April and early May bring the "long rains," and many operators scale back or close. October is an excellent transitional month with improving conditions and lower prices.

Month by Month

January – March: Peak season. Calm seas, 30m+ underwater visibility, whale sharks plentiful. Warmest water temperatures (~28°C). The island is at its most beautiful and most popular.

April – May: Long rains arrive. Some operators close. Diving remains possible and actually excellent on protected reef sites. Prices drop significantly. Very few tourists.

June – September: High season resumes. Whale sharks still present, diving excellent, but seas can be rough on open water trips. Good fishing. Marine life activity is high.

October: Shoulder season — one of the island's best-kept secrets. Conditions improving, whale sharks returning, low prices, very few visitors. An excellent time to come.

November – December: Whale shark season peaks. Seas calm down. This is arguably the single best month combination for combining whale sharks, good visibility, and reasonable prices before peak rates in January.

What About the Weather?

Mafia is tropical year-round — temperatures stay between 25–32°C throughout the year. Even in the "rainy season," rain typically comes in short bursts rather than day-long downpours, and many days are perfectly sunny. The island's lush green interior, visible year-round, is a direct result of that rainfall.

Our Recommendation

For first-time visitors combining whale sharks, diving, and beach relaxation, October through February is the sweet spot. If budget matters and you don't mind some rougher days, June through September offers great diving at lower rates. April and early May are for adventurous travellers who want the island almost entirely to themselves.
