Diving Mafia Island: Coral Reefs, Fish Life, and the Best Dive Sites

Scuba divers who make the journey to Mafia Island are consistently surprised by what they find. While Zanzibar gets the name recognition, serious divers often prefer Mafia — less developed, more protected, and home to marine life that simply isn't present at more heavily visited sites.

Mafia Island Marine Park

Mafia Island Marine Park was established in 1995 and covers 822 square kilometres of ocean, reef, mangrove, and beach. It was Tanzania's first marine park and one of the first in Africa. The protection has made a real difference — the coral here is genuinely healthy compared to many Indian Ocean sites that have suffered from bleaching, dynamite fishing, and anchor damage.

The park requires marine park fees from all visitors, which go directly to conservation and enforcement. This is part of why the reefs are in such good condition.

What Divers Will Find

Mafia's reefs host an impressive range of life. On a typical dive week, you can expect to encounter:

• Green and hawksbill turtles (extremely common — Mafia has significant nesting beaches)


• Whale sharks (seasonal, but regularly seen by divers in the right months)


• Manta rays, particularly around Kinasi Pass during tidal flows


• Reef sharks — whitetip and blacktip are commonly seen


• Moray eels, lionfish, stonefish, and a dense variety of nudibranchs


• Huge schools of snapper, batfish, and barracuda


• Occasionally: hammerhead sharks and dolphins in deeper water

Top Dive Sites

Kinasi Pass: The most famous dive on Mafia. A channel between islands that produces strong tidal currents, bringing manta rays and large pelagic fish. Dive it on the incoming tide for the best action. Intermediate to advanced.

Chole Bay: The protected bay in front of Mafia's main accommodation area. Multiple reef systems, excellent for night dives, incredibly dense fish life. Perfect for all levels.

Forbes Bay: Excellent coral gardens, turtles almost guaranteed, and good visibility year-round. A consistent favourite for beginners and underwater photographers.

Dindini Reef: A remote site requiring a longer boat trip, rewarded by pristine reef that sees very little traffic. Shark encounters common.

How Does Mafia Compare to Zanzibar?

Zanzibar has excellent diving in places, but pressure from high visitor numbers shows on some reefs. Mafia has perhaps a quarter of Zanzibar's visitors, and the marine park protection has kept the reefs in noticeably better condition. If you've dived Zanzibar and want to see what East Africa's reefs can look like with less pressure, Mafia is the answer.
