Mafia Island vs Zanzibar: Which Should You Choose?

Ask any Tanzanian tourism professional about Mafia Island and Zanzibar, and most will give you the same answer: they're completely different experiences. The comparison gets made because both are Indian Ocean islands accessible from Dar es Salaam, but the similarities largely stop there.

Zanzibar: History, Culture, and High Volume

Zanzibar is one of Africa's most visited tourist destinations, and for good reason. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with genuinely fascinating Swahili-Arab history. The northern beaches — Nungwi, Kendwa — are beautiful. The food scene has developed into something special. And the infrastructure is mature, with accommodation spanning every budget.

The trade-off is volume. Nungwi beach on a peak-season day is packed. Popular dive sites see heavy traffic. Some of the famous reefs have suffered. The "remote island" feeling is harder to find.

Mafia Island: Wild, Uncrowded, Marine-Focused

Mafia receives a fraction of Zanzibar's visitors. On a busy day in Kilindoni, you might count a dozen other tourists. This isn't because the island is inferior — it's because it's less developed and less marketed, which is precisely the point for the travellers who seek it out.

Choosing Mafia means accepting: fewer restaurant options, no nightlife to speak of, limited shopping, and slightly higher prices per night (the remoteness adds a premium). The accommodation range is narrower. Getting here requires more effort.

Choosing Zanzibar means accepting: more crowds, more commercial tourist infrastructure, and — honestly — a different relationship with the ocean. Zanzibar is better for land-based exploration; Mafia is better if the sea is your primary reason for being there.

The Answer: Both, If You Can

The most satisfying Tanzania coast itinerary combines both. Spend a few days in Stone Town for the history, a few days on a Zanzibar beach, then fly to Mafia for the marine experience that the bigger island can't offer.
