Getting to Mafia Island: Flights, Ferry, and Everything In Between
Mafia Island sits about 120 kilometres south of Dar es Salaam in the Indian Ocean. It's far enough from mainland Tanzania to feel properly remote, but close enough to reach easily — especially if you fly. Here's everything you need to know about getting here.
By Air (Recommended)
The fastest and most reliable way to reach Mafia Island is by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam. Several operators run scheduled and charter flights, with the journey taking approximately 30–40 minutes.
Mafia Island Airport (IATA: MFA) is a small airstrip in Kilindoni, the island's main town, approximately 5 minutes by road from Mafia Dream Hotel.
Airlines currently serving Mafia Island include:
- Auric Air: Regular scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam Julius Nyerere International Airport
- Coastal Aviation: Scheduled and charter flights, often stopping at other Tanzanian destinations
- Tropical Air: Charter and scheduled services
Flights typically depart in the morning. Book well in advance during peak season (October–March), as seats are limited on these small aircraft.
From Zanzibar
If you're combining Mafia with a Zanzibar trip, Coastal Aviation and Auric Air both offer connecting flights between the two islands. The flight takes approximately 1 hour via Dar es Salaam or direct routes depending on the schedule. This is a popular itinerary — Zanzibar for culture and beaches, Mafia for diving and whale sharks.
By Ferry (Budget Option)
A passenger ferry runs between Nyamisati on the mainland and Kilindoni on Mafia Island. The journey takes approximately 4–6 hours depending on sea conditions and the vessel. The ferry is inexpensive but significantly slower and less comfortable than flying, and schedules are less reliable.
To reach Nyamisati from Dar es Salaam, you take a dalla-dalla (shared minibus) from the Temeke area — allow several hours for the road journey. This option suits budget travellers and those who enjoy the journey as part of the adventure.
Airport Transfers
Mafia Dream Hotel offers airport transfers at $10 per person each way. We recommend arranging this in advance — taxis at the airport are limited, and the walk with luggage from the airstrip to town is not comfortable in the heat. Contact us with your flight details and we'll meet you at the airstrip.
What to Bring
Mafia Island has limited shopping. Before arriving, make sure you have:
- Cash in Tanzanian Shillings or US Dollars (ATMs are unreliable)
- Any prescription medication you'll need for your stay
- Sunscreen, reef-safe if possible
- Mosquito repellent
- Your snorkelling mask if you have a personal preference (we provide equipment but personal masks fit better)
The island has basic shops in Kilindoni for essentials, but the selection is limited. Embrace the simplicity — that's part of what makes Mafia special.
