How to Get to Mafia Island from Dar es Salaam

Mafia Island is located about 130 kilometres south of Dar es Salaam in the Indian Ocean. Despite its remote feel, the island is surprisingly easy to reach.

Option 1: Fly from Dar es Salaam (Recommended)

The fastest way to reach Mafia Island is by light aircraft from Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR). Coastal Aviation and Auric Air operate scheduled flights to Kilindoni Airport. The flight takes approximately 30-45 minutes and costs between $120-180 USD each way.

Option 2: Ferry from Nyamisati

Take a bus from Dar es Salaam to Nyamisati (3-4 hours), then board the public ferry to Mafia Island (2-3 hours). This is the budget-friendly option.
