The peak whale shark season on Mafia Island runs from October to March. During these months, whale sharks gather in the nutrient-rich waters around the Mafia Island Marine Park to feed on plankton and fish spawn. Water visibility is excellent, temperatures are warm (27-30C), and sightings are almost guaranteed.

What to Expect on a Whale Shark Excursion

A typical whale shark excursion from Mafia Dream Hotel lasts 4-6 hours. You will be taken by boat to known feeding areas, where experienced local guides will spot the whale sharks from above. You will then slip into the water with a mask and snorkel and swim alongside these magnificent creatures. Whale sharks can reach 12 metres in length but are completely harmless to humans.
